Torrevieja (Valencian: Torrevella, meaning: old tower), is one of the main attractions along the Costa Blanca. Torrevieja is a bathing resort located at the Mediterranean sea, 41 km at south of Alicante in Spain. It is 30 km² large, and has approximately 20km coast and counts over 91.000 inhabitants. In summer to population climbs up to 650.000 inhabitants.
The Torrevieja area is best to describe as a long country region also known as la veja baja, which is famous for its fantastic beaches of both soft golden and white sand. Because of this, the area is also very popular with the spanish people who spend big parts of their holiday here.
Torrevieja itself is situated near the sea and is surrounded by two large natural salt lakes, which are the largest in Europe.
The Torrevieja and La Mata lakes are in particulary popular with people suffering from heart problems, reuma, artritis of asthmatic disorders. People say that its the “healing forces” of the saltlakes who ease the pain. The warm climate eases the symptoms, what results in benefits like finding peace, health and harmony living in this part of southeast Spain.
Tourism is the main source of income in Torrevieja, because in the summer the total population can run to 650,000 people. In former days however, the salt production from the salt lakes (Salinas the Torrevieja) was the most important activity.
A visit to Torrevieja doesn't lack contact with the authentic Spanish culture. The town center and streets around the main church in particular are a maze of cobbled streets where you will find pretty well every type of shop you can imagine and inviting establishments with international menus.
Since Torrevieja is a year round resort, the city centre is always very buzzing. During the busy summer months it's a top holiday location for families. Even te rest of the year the holiday vibe is present.
